Release date: October 2006
DataFort, the UK-based provider of off-site data backup, today launched its new OutlookFort service for ‘superior’ e-mail backup.
OutlookFort’s fully managed service offers users a more regular, more reliable email backup solution. All data is encrypted and stored in an enterprise-grade secure datacentre, but is available for near-instant restore in the event of a disaster.
In contrast to solutions based on large email archive (PST) files, OutlookFort uses the MAPI protocol to backup individual mails and contacts from within Outlook. This enables companies to backup all mailboxes remotely on a two-hourly basis without clogging Internet bandwidth.
As large e-mail archive files are notoriously unstable when transferred across restricted bandwidth connections, OutlookFort also offers companies greater peace of mind that backups will be successful.
“With e-mail now the main communication tool in most businesses, daily backup of e-mail archives, whether it is to disk, tape or a remote datacentre, is simply too infrequent. It leaves companies open to the risk of losing a complete day of correspondence across the business,” comments Marcie Terman, managing director of DataFort.
“We are also finding that companies, especially those who have experienced a disaster, are becoming more concerned with the speed and reliability of the restore process offered by different backup alternatives. Knowing you have a secure backup is only a small consolation when it takes three days to restore company e-mail.”
The increased granularity of the OutlookFort service enables the rapid restore of single corrupted mailboxes, and even individual mails and contacts that have been mistakenly deleted. On the creation of an account, end-users build a replica of their Outlook file structure (mailbox and contacts) on DataFort’s secure servers. In the event of a disaster, however large or small, users simply enter password details, then checkbox the folders or individual mails and contacts they wish to restore, before data is transferred back to Outlook.
If a larger, full-mailbox or company-wide restore is necessary, OutlookFort automatically selects each user’s most recent mails to be restored first, ensuring that most work can pick up immediately even before the full restoration process is completed.
OutlookFort is priced according to a simple, understandable model, with charges on a per user basis, regardless of how much information is stored in the archive. This simplifies budgeting for customers and avoids nasty surprises or unexpectedly high bills. Single user accounts are charged at £6.95 per month, with prices dropping to under £1 per user (per month) for customers of the 100 User Plan.
